Does Instagram notify
when you screenshot a story?
Short answer
No. Instagram does not notify anyone when you screenshot or screen-record a story, and the same goes for posts, reels, highlights and profiles. The one exception is in direct messages: a disappearing photo or video, sent as “view once” or “allow replay” or in vanish mode, does alert the sender if you screenshot it. What the owner of a story does see is that you watched it.

What people can see: the view, not the screenshot
The owner of a story gets a list of the accounts that opened it, available for 48 hours. A screenshot adds nothing to that list and triggers nothing. So the question behind this one is usually a different one: not “will they know I saved it” but “will they know I looked”. They will, if you opened it from your account.
Where Instagram does notify
In direct messages, and only for disappearing media. If someone sends you a photo or video set to be seen once or replayed once, or you are chatting in vanish mode, taking a screenshot shows the sender a small mark next to the message. Ordinary messages, photos sent normally, and shared posts don’t trigger anything.
Why people think stories notify
In 2018 Instagram tested a screenshot alert for stories with a small group of users: a star-shaped icon appeared next to the name of whoever had taken one. The test ended within months and the feature never launched. Articles from that time still circulate.
What this doesn’t make okay
That nobody is notified doesn’t make a screenshot yours to share. The story still belongs to the person who posted it. Saving one for yourself is one thing; reposting it, or using it against someone, is another.
