Can you see who views
your Instagram story?

Short answer

Yes. Open your own story and swipe up, or tap the viewers icon at the bottom left: Instagram lists every account that opened it. The list is available for 48 hours after the story was posted. It doesn’t show how many times each person watched, and it doesn’t show anyone who watched without an Instagram account, for example through a web viewer.

Updated

Where the list is

While the story is live, open it and swipe up. After it expires, go to your archive (profile → menu → Archive → Stories archive), open the story and swipe up: the names stay for 48 hours from the moment of posting, and after that only the number remains.

What the order of viewers means

Instagram has never published how it orders the list. What people consistently observe: with few viewers the list is roughly chronological, and past a few dozen it is ranked, with accounts you interact with most near the top. It is not a ranking of who looks at your profile most, and it says nothing about how many times someone watched.

Who doesn’t appear

Anyone who saw the story without an Instagram account opening it: web story viewers read public stories from outside, so there is no username to record. People who only saw the preview circle without opening the story don’t appear either.

If you don’t want someone to see your stories

Settings → Hide story and live from, and choose the accounts. For a smaller audience, use Close Friends. On a public account neither one stops a web viewer, because a public story is public; only a private account does.

Related questions

Can you see how many times someone viewed your story?
No. Each account appears once, however many times it watched.
Can you see who viewed your story after 24 hours?
Yes, from the archive, until 48 hours after you posted it.
Why is the same person always first on my viewers list?
Because the list is ranked by your interaction with each account, not by who watched first or most.
Can someone watch my story without me knowing?
If your account is public, yes: a web viewer opens it without an Instagram account. If it is private, only approved followers can watch, and they appear on the list.

Watch a public story without being on that list

The list only contains Instagram accounts. Type a public username here and its stories open in this page, with no account of yours involved.
