How to see who unfollowed you on Instagram.
Updated
Why Instagram will not tell you
Unfollowing is deliberately quiet. The person who unfollows is not announced, and the person unfollowed is not notified, which is the same design decision that keeps follow and unfollow low-friction.
Instagram removed the Following activity tab in October 2019. That tab was the closest thing to a public record of follow activity, and it has not come back.
The manual method
This is free and it works, but only going forward:
- Open your profile and tap your follower count.
- Save the list. A screenshot works for a short list; for a long one, request your data export from Instagram, which includes followers as a file.
- Wait.
- Compare the new list with the saved one. Anyone missing has unfollowed or deactivated.
The weakness is obvious: you only learn about changes after the first snapshot, and comparing long lists by hand is miserable.
How tracking apps actually work
Every unfollower tracker does the snapshot comparison for you. There is no privileged access involved, because none exists.
The difference between a safe one and a dangerous one is what it asks for. An app that wants your Instagram password is asking to log in as you, which breaks Instagram's terms and puts your account at risk of being disabled. An app that reads only public data cannot do that and does not need to.
A practical rule: if it asks for your password, close it. If it promises live notifications the moment someone unfollows, it is either guessing or lying, because that data is not exposed to anyone.
Tracking the other direction
Most people asking this question want to know who left. The more revealing signal is often the opposite one: who a person recently started following.
That is the same snapshot technique applied to a following list instead of a follower list, and on a public account it needs no login at all. It is what our weekly digest does: a snapshot now, another one later, and a plain list of what was added and removed, with each new account analysed so you know what the change means rather than just that it happened.
Related questions
Does Instagram notify you when someone unfollows you?
No. Unfollows are silent in both directions, and there is no list of them anywhere in the app.
Is there a free way to see who unfollowed me?
Yes, by comparing your follower list over time yourself. It costs nothing but only detects changes after your first snapshot.
Are unfollower apps safe?
The ones that ask for your Instagram password are not: logging in as you breaks Instagram's terms and risks your account. Tools that read only public data carry no such risk.
Why did my follower count drop with nobody unfollowing?
Deactivated and removed accounts lower the count too, and Instagram periodically clears fake accounts. A count drop is not always an unfollow.
