How to watch Instagram stories
anonymously.

Short answer

Instagram adds your name to a story’s viewer list the moment you open it in the app, and there is no setting to turn that off. You stay off the list only if the story is opened by something other than your account: a web viewer that reads public stories, or an account that isn’t you. Airplane mode is unreliable. None of this works for private accounts.

Updated

Why your name appears in the first place

Every story has a viewer list that only its owner can see. Instagram writes your username on it when the story loads in your app, not when you finish watching it, so closing it quickly doesn’t help. The list stays visible to the owner for 48 hours after the story was posted.

Method 1: a web story viewer

A web viewer such as LikePatrol reads the public stories of an account through a data provider, not through an Instagram account of yours. Instagram has no username to put on the list, so the owner sees nothing. You type the username, and the photos and videos from the last 24 hours play in the page, in the order they were posted.

This only works for public accounts, because a public story is already visible to anyone. It is also the only method here that doesn’t require you to be logged into Instagram at all.

Method 2: airplane mode, and why it fails

The trick is old: open Instagram, let the stories preload, switch on airplane mode, watch, then close the app before going back online. It sometimes works and often doesn’t. The app can store the view and send it when the connection returns, videos frequently haven’t preloaded, and one slip puts your name on the list with no way to remove it. Treat it as a gamble.

Method 3: a second account

A second account does keep your main name off the list, but the owner still sees a name: the other one. If that account is new, empty, or follows nobody, it is the kind of viewer people notice. It also doesn’t help with a private account unless that account is approved as a follower.

What nobody can do: private accounts

A private account shows its stories only to followers it approved. No website, app, or trick can show them to anyone else, and any service that claims otherwise is after your Instagram password or your card. LikePatrol doesn’t try.

Related questions

Can someone see that I watched their Instagram story?
Yes, if you open it in the Instagram app while logged in: your username goes on the viewer list, which the owner can see for 48 hours. If a web viewer opens it instead, there is no username to add.
Does watching half a story count as a view?
Yes. The view is recorded when the story loads, not when it ends.
Can I remove my name from a viewer list after watching?
Only by blocking the account, which removes you from the list and has obvious side effects. There is no other way to undo a view.
Is it legal to watch public stories through a website?
A public story is content its author chose to show to anyone. Watching it is not the issue; what you do with it can be. Downloading and reposting someone’s stories, or using them to harass, is a different matter.

Watch a public account’s stories now

Type the username. The stories it posted in the last 24 hours open here, and its highlights too. Your name is not added to any list, because no Instagram account of yours opens them.
