How to hide who you follow on TikTok.

Updated

Private is the mechanism

With a private TikTok account, only people you approve can follow you and see your videos, your bio, your likes and your following and followers lists. A public account exposes all of it to any visitor.

The toggle is in the privacy section of settings, as a single private account switch.

TikTok does move settings between app versions more often than most platforms, so if the wording on your screen differs from this, look under account privacy rather than assuming the option is gone.

Accounts for under-18s

TikTok sets accounts for users under 18 to private by default, which means the following list is already restricted unless the setting has been changed.

That default is worth knowing in both directions. If you are a parent checking whether a teenager's follow list is exposed, a private account means it is not, and no tool can read it. If it is readable, the account has been switched to public at some point.

What stays visible

Going private does not retract what is already out. Comments you have left on other people's public videos stay attached to those videos with your username on them.

Your username, profile photo, bio and follower counts remain visible on a private account. What is restricted is the content and the lists.

If the list has already been public

Anything readable while the account was public may already have been saved by someone. Switching to private stops future access; it does not undo past access.

This is the same limit that applies on every platform, and it is the honest caveat that privacy guides tend to leave out.

Related questions

Can I hide only my following list on TikTok and stay public?

The reliable control is the private account setting, which restricts the lists along with your videos. TikTok occasionally adds granular options, so check the account privacy section on your version of the app.

Are teen TikTok accounts private by default?

Yes. TikTok sets accounts for users under 18 to private by default, which restricts the following and followers lists to approved followers.

Does going private delete my old comments?

No. Comments you left on other people's public videos stay where they are, with your username visible.

Can a third-party tool read a private TikTok following list?

No. If TikTok does not serve the list to a visitor, there is nothing for a tool to read. Any service claiming otherwise is either guessing or asking you to hand over credentials.
