Short answer
A story is visible for 24 hours from the moment it is posted, then it disappears from the profile. Each video story can run up to 60 seconds; a photo shows for a few seconds. After 24 hours the story lives on only in its owner’s private archive, unless they add it to a highlight, which stays on the profile until removed.

The clock starts when the story is published, not when you see it, so a story can vanish while you are halfway through someone’s day. There is no way to extend it. The owner can delete it earlier.
How long one story can be
Up to 60 seconds for a video. Longer recordings are cut into consecutive stories. A photo is shown for a few seconds, and viewers can hold the screen to pause it.
What happens afterwards
Instagram moves expired stories to the owner’s archive, which only they can see. From there they can repost one or add it to a highlight. Highlights are the circles under the bio: they don’t expire, and anyone who can see the profile can watch them.
Seeing someone else’s story after it expired
Once a story has expired it can’t be loaded by anyone, through any tool, unless its owner made it a highlight. The only way to have it later is to have saved it while it was live.
